Shot reverse shot: This is where a cut is edited between two characters, either when they are looking at each other or conversing. This is usually done over the shoulder at eye level, the purpose of this technique is to create intimacy.
180 degree rule: This is a basic guideline that states that two characters in one scence should always have the same left/right relationship. The purpose of this is to create logical coherence between cuts and scenes .
If this rule is broken it would disorientate the viewer.
The new shot from the opposite side is called a reverse angle.
Match on action: This is an editing technique used in stability editing. This is where one shot cuts to another shot revealing the actions of the issue in the first shot. The purpose of this is to create a feeling of sense and continuity.
